Counselor's Corner

  • Assisting and advising students to make applications to universities in the USA. In 2009/10 we will widen this scope to include other countries such as Canada, Australia, UK and Japan.
  • Preparation of students in the Middle and High School for College Admission.
  • Providing individual counseling to students on course choice and planning as well as constructing personal academic schedules.

  • Administer and interpret the results of tests used for the educational assessments of pupils.
  • Write educational reports concerning students with learning and/or behavioral difficulties and provide feedback and recommendations to parents and staff.
  • Provide career counseling for High School students.
  • Use of educational and vocational tests where appropriate.
  • Providing personal counseling to students in matters affecting educational progress.
  • Providing information sessions to staff and parents on more complex educational, vocational and financial issues.
  • Providing counseling to teaching staff and parents referred by the Principal.
  • Liaise closely with classroom teachers and other staff in relation to the needs of students.
  • Maintain appropriate confidential records of our students.

Junior Time Line for College Admission-A Check List

September

  • Attend ‘College Night’

October

  • Take the PSAT October 15th  – Students will register at the time of testing

November-December

  • Register for January 24th  SAT 1, if appropriate – Regular deadline: 12/26

January

  • Take January 24th  SAT 2(if applicable)
  • Attend College Workshop on January 30th  for Juniors and Families
  • Get college counselor assignment
  • Begin to plan spring and summer college visits
  • Make plans for a productive summer experience

February

  • Complete the Information Sheets for your college counselor

NOTE: This needs to be done prior to your first meeting.

March

  • Register for the May 2nd  SAT 1or2, if appropriate-Regular Deadline:3/31
  • Meet with your college counselor

April

  • Register for the May 2nd   SAT1or 2, if appropriate-Late Deadline:3/31
  • Register for the June 6th  SAT1or 2, if appropriate-Regular Deadline:5/5
  • Meet with your college counselor

May

  • Register for the June 6th  SAT 1 or 2, if appropriate-Late Deadline:5/5
  • Meet with your college counselor
  • Work towards a strong finish. 

June and On:

  • Take June 6th SAT 1or2 (if applicable)
  • Visit colleges
  • Do your summer reading
  • Research your list and gather information to rework your list

General Expectations

By the end of the school year we expect you to have:

  • Completed the Information Sheets.
  • Met with your counselor at least twice.
  • Taken the SAT 1 or 2 (in three subject areas).
  • Established a preliminary list of potential schools.
  • Research more schools over the summer.

By the end of the summer we expect you to have:

  • Created a working list
  • Collected some applications
  • Drafted common application essays and worked on supplements for schools that you are sure that you are going to apply to.
